L-Carnitine is an amino acid, natural compound manufactured in the liver and kidneys from the amino acids lysine and methionine. Most healthy people produce enough cartinine – or get enough from dietary sources such as meat and dairy products – to supply the body’s needs. The body requires lysine, methionine, vitamin C, niacin (vitamin B3) and vitamin B6 (pyroxide) to produce carnitine. But certain conditions, such as liver and kidney problems, as well as certain medications, can cause a cartinine deficiency or can interfere with the action of cartinine, making supplementation necessary.

L-cartinine affects muscles. Cartnine plays a vital role in helping the body turn fat into energy. Stored in the skeletal muscles, heart, brain, and sperm, it helps supply energy to a wide variety of tissues and organs.

Supplementation with cartinine is primarily used for several different heart and circulatory conditions. Patients with exercise-induces angina who take cartinine can exercise longer and more intensively without pain. Studies also indicate that people with atherosclerosis who get painful leg cramps when walking may benefit from taking cartinine as a supplement.

For people with type 2 diabetes, cartinine may help the body control blood sugar and prevent injury to the nerves of the heart. It may also help prevent complications when people with diabetes undergo heart surgery.
